Searching for the perfect place to welcome the Year of the Monkey? Here in Parramatta, you will experience the culture and the fun. Just head to the Centenary Square on February 19th at 4:30pm for the Parramatta Lunar New Year Festival.
Feast your eyes as the streets fill with colourful lights and lanterns and also prepare yourself for a gastronomic treat as Asian food flood the street. Keep in mind that there are two food trucks you should not miss.
First is Mama Linh's Vietnamese street food. Try Mama's Signature Banh Mi Fillings such as pho beef, lemongrass pork, and pulled pork. If you don't like bread, they have fillings in a rice vermicelli salad. Choices for the fillings include crispy skin chicken roll, oven baked lemongrass chicken, slow cooked pulled beef, and sweet soy shitaake mushrooms.
Make sure to also stop by Sydney's Tsuru food truck for some beef + kimchi bun, chilli tofu bun, pork belly bun, and lamb rendang bun. Tsuru also offers balinese lemongrass chicken roll, balinese lemongrass roast pork roll, avocado rice paper roll, prawn rice paper roll, tofu rice paper roll, and pandan pancake.
Besides food, there will also be interactive games such as Barrel of Monkeys, Mah-jong, and a ping pong tournament. If you are interested in learning calligraphy, they will be offering a calligraphy workshop. But if you prefer crafts, you can create your own lantern and display it in the lantern garden.
When evening comes, food writer and presenter Melissa Leong will take care of the entertainment. Enjoy live performances by Marlisa Ann Punzalan or simply Marlisa, the sixth season winner of The X Factor Australia and also the Dauntless Movement Crew. For some contemporary Asian music, Sydney-based band Ai Ai Ai will be showcasing a cultural production.
While you're there, do not forget to find the God of Fortune and pick up your lucky red envelope. By 9:30pm, get ready for the dragon and lion dance performance as well as spectacular fireworks display.
